MARY JEAN RATH (aka coach MJ)
Skating on the dugout at the family farm and gliding on the natural ice at the local community rink in Vanguard, Saskatchewan, Coach MJ has skated her whole life. MJ’s sister, Sandra, and herself thank their parents for driving the many miles back and forth from the farm to Swift Current for training so we could live a life we love. Not to forget the extra travels to competitions and test days to achieve the Canadian Figure Skating Association’s Gold status in disciplines of figure, free skate and dance, and yes, even extra early mornings to start patch at 6:00 am. Every year, after hoeing weeds and rock picking by hand, the sisters were off to 6-8 weeks of summer skating in Medicine Hat, Calgary and/or Vancouver. Completing Grade XII, Mary Jean stayed home to skate another year to finish her personal skating goals. She then accepted a position in Regina as the Executive Director for the Saskatchewan Figure Skating Association, completing two years. With coaching in her vision and a call from Medicine Hat, Coach MJ accepted the position. (Thank you, Coach Gay.) Mary Jean Rath has been a certified CFSA/Skate Canada Professional Coach since 1979. Her accolades include: Platinum Star Power Skating Professional Coach, Certified DreamBuilder Coach with Mary Morrissey Life Mastery Institute - The Premier Training Center for Transformational Coaching, NCCP Level III Certified, CanPowerSkate Certified, First Aid Certified, Volunteer Community Service Special Olympics Certified Coach, Catholic Women’s League member for 20 plus years, and Volunteer Coordinator for the Holy Family Parish Children’s Liturgy Program.
